FAQs - Scanning / Restoration

1. What do you recommend to ensure the final image is the best quality?

It is always best to provide me with the source material. For most situations, this means using the original film negative or slide the image was captured on. However, if that isn’t available, using the original print made from the negative/slide is the next best format.

Some clients have a print-of-a-print. While these can be good, this introduces another layer of degradation from the ink or paper used to make that copy.

A digital file can certainly be used, but like making a print-of-a-print, the quality will depend on the lens and camera used, the skill of the photographer to get the lighting and focus correct, and the resolution of the file.

If offering a digital file, it’s best to have a resolution of at least 2500px on the long end and the more the better.

2. What is the difference between enhancement and restoration?

Enhancement is done to correct issues such as poor contrast, colour shifting, and minor defects such as specks and small tears. The image or print is in relatively good shape physically (e.g. no missing sections, a flat surface, and no staining).

A restoration is for images with more significant issues. Missing sections, moderate to major bends or ripples, stains from water, areas where an image has been in the sun so that it shows the border of the original frame, and significant colour shifts are examples of what classifies a restoration.

3. How long will it take to scan, enhance, restore, or colourize the image?

Scanning one to five images will take about a day.

Enhancing one image should take approximately 2 days.

Restoring an image is highly variable. I would allow one week, but it may be longer depending on the damage.

Colourizing, like restoring, is highly variable. I would allow one to two weeks, but it could take longer.

You’ve gone to the trouble to get your image looking its best. Rushing this part is not recommended.

4. Can I see the work before it is printed or sent back to me?

Yes. You will receive your own digital gallery where I will upload both the original and the current version of the image. You have input into the progress before it is finalized.

5. Will I receive a digital file of the image?

Yes, all images will include the digital file for you to download and keep.

6. Can I have the image made into something special like a framed picture or table art?

Absolutely! Any image you desire can be transformed into framed art, a canvas, a fine art print or even an ornament. Just let me know what you need.

7. What is the standard for your restoration/colourization? Will the people or places look like a modern photo? Will the colours be accurate?

A restoration strives not to correct the original mistakes made by the photographer, but rather, remove the signs of age and damage from the photo. Initially, I try to make the photo pleasing to the eye and bring out the inherent qualities of the original. However, I don’t remove any objects or change the appearance of people.

If a photo is already coloured, I will improve the colours already present and try to present people in a flattering way. This may result in some adjustment of existing colours. However, I won’t make a red dress green if that is the colour in the photo. If the photo is black and white, then the colours will either be at your discretion or those that seem to work well with the environment present. For example, bright or neon colours wouldn’t be appropriate for a Victorian-era photo.

A restoration can go further if desired, and correct mistakes or faults found in the original photo. For example, maybe the photo has a distracting car in the background which could have been removed. Or, a person’s clothing has wrinkles which could be smoothed out. Changes such as these are at your discretion.

8. How do I get the photo(s) to you?

You have the option to hand deliver your image(s). This will save you a $25 pickup fee. However, I can also pick up your photos for your convenience. Also, you may ship your image(s) to me through the mail and I will mail them back when complete.

If you have a digital format that needs to be restored, then simply send me the file.

9. What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept Visa, Mastercard, e-transfer, and cash.

10. Do you accept film negatives/slides?

Yes, but only 35mm.

11. How far will you travel for a pickup? Is there mileage?

My service area is generally within a 40 km radius of my office and includes Burlington, Oakville, Halton Region, Milton, Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Etobicoke, and Guelph. I don’t generally serve the city of Toronto, but depending on your situation, I may be able to help you.

I charge $0.70 for each km beyond a 20 km radius of my office for both directions.

12. I can get a restorer for half the price. Why should I choose you?

I understand.

Just as it is for cars, computers, wedding planners, vacations, and homes, you must decide what quality you want and how much you are willing to spend. You can save money and buy a budget vacation, though you might not like the room and view, the food, or the overall quality. But you did save money. Or you can value the experience and spend more to ensure a nice room, excellent food, and memorable activities.

My restorations are personalized and done by hand. I look at every speck and every detail to ensure it gets the respect your memories deserve. I am an accredited photographer with the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC).

As stated above, I am a full-service photography business. I do everything, which means you have time for other things that are important to you. If you value personalized service and planning, a photographer who values the craft, and a commitment to the final image and your satisfaction, then I am here for you.
