About Brian

Brian’s move into professional photography shouldn’t surprise those who know him. His ventures have always tried to balance creative expression with technical precision while at the same time making contributions to his community.

His love of the photographic arts was sparked after discovering the Arts section of his local library as a teenager. There, he discovered the beauty of Ansel Adams, the originality of Annie Leibovitz, and the nobility of Yousuf Karsh. Photographing his family and neighbourhood on film, he was often disappointed that he couldn’t make his images sing. The missing ingredient was time.

While earning his Honours B.Sc. in Biology from McMaster University, he made time to help new Canadians learn English on campus and volunteered at elementary schools, sharing what he learned in the laboratory about animal behaviour with students. For this, he received the Award of Excellence from the local school board.

Brian spent nearly two decades in the classroom as an educator where he aimed to inspire and motivate students through an interdisciplinary program where fun and humour were essential ingredients. His contributions led to both community and organizational acclaim. However, it became increasingly apparent that the ship on which he travelled no longer had a bridge crew who knew the destination. It was time to find one that had clearly mapped its journey.

Under the tutelage of professional photographer, Philip Sutherland, director and founder of the West Toronto Photography Group, Brian saw a new vehicle for his creativity and drive. He volunteered his time at lighting workshops and group events, helping others to find creative expression through visual media.

Naturally, Brian was ready to take the next step in his creative journey and opened Brian Ackin Photography, a full-service location-based professional photography studio. There, he helps families, learning centres, and individuals see the best version of themselves through personalized photo shoots.

He is an accredited member of the Professional Photographers of Canada, with his work showcased at the 2024 National Salon Exhibition and 2023 Eastern Canada Regional Salon Exhibition. He currently serves as the PPOC Communications Chair for the Ontario Region.

Brian loves to use his fountain pens to write pen pal letters to international friends, create new recipes, and plan his next cruise to a new port of call.

He can’t wait to talk with you about your session and looks forward to telling your beautiful story.
